WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's soccer team opened Mountain East Conference (MEC) play against West Liberty University. The Falcons received a pair of goals from
Sam Yuen and
Serenity Thomas as the team won, 5-1.
From the opening kick, Fairmont State applied the early pressure in the offensive end and paid it off in the 26th minute as
Sam Yuen scored after a pass from
Braylyn Sparks. 30 seconds later, Yuen found the back of the net again as
Ashley Rainho picked up the assist.Â
Leading 2-0, the Falcons did not let up and added two more shots to the total until
Lyndy Van Horn scored the final goal of the half in the 42nd minute.
Calloway Segeleon earned the assist on the goal as the visitors went into the half leading 3-0.
The beginning of the second half was plagued with fouls as both teams were awarded two yellow cards in the first 17 minutes. In the 63rd minute, West Liberty got on the board but Fairmont State started to go back on the offensive.Â
Serenity Thomas extended the lead back to three (4-1) with a goal in the 82nd minute as Rainho picked up her second assist. Two minutes, Thomas added to the lead and secured the four-goal victory.
Olivia Johnston earned the win as she made two saves while the Falcons totaled 11 shots on goal. West Liberty tallied six corner kicks compared to four for the visitors.
Fairmont State (1-1-1, 1-0-0) welcomes Wheeling University on Wednesday, September 18 at Duvall-Rosier Field. First kick is set for 7:00 p.m.
