FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's soccer team welcomed Wheeling University to Duvall-Rosier Field for a Mountain East Conference (MEC) battle. The Falcons scored twice in the second half as they bested the Cardinals, 3-2.
Just over two minutes into the contest, Fairmont State fouled Wheeling in box as the visitors were given a penalty kick. Mary DiFonzo took the penalty kick for the Cardinals as she was able to get the kick past
Olivia Johnston for the opening goal.
Trailing 1-0, the two sides went back and forth until
Serenity Thomas was able to take the ball away from the defender and evened the game at one in the 12th minute.Â
For the remainder of the half, the Falcons were able to take six more shots but none of them were on target. As time ran out in the first half, the two teams stayed tied at one.
Both teams started the half off with the exchanging of possessions until the 61st minute,
Lauren Dye found the back of the net off a pass from Thomas to give Fairmont State a 2-1 lead. The lead was short-lived as Wheeling evened the game at two just over a minute later.
The Falcons started to take control of the game as they were awarded a corner kick.
Sam Yuen delivered the kick into the box as
Braylyn Sparks touch-passed it to
Filippa Stalhammar. Stalhammar was able to find an opening and broke the tie with a goal in the 75th minute.
The Cardinals tried to even the score but were not able to get into the offensive zone as Fairmont State held on for the one-goal victory.
