FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's soccer team faced Salem University in a matinee match. The Falcons scored early and often as they bested the Tigers, 7-0.
Fairmont State wasted little time getting on the board as
Serenity Thomas found
Lauren Dye for the opening goal in the fifth minute. Later in the half, Thomas took the ball down the near sideline, made a defender miss and scored in the 24th minute.
Four minutes later,
Braylyn Sparks scored her second goal of the season to make it a 3-0 game. In the 33rd minute,
Braylyn Sparks took a corner kick and as it sailed into the box,
Arrington Sparks found the back of the goal to extend the lead. The Falcons scored on another corner set piece as
Riley Thorpe scored off the
Tegan Wheeler pass as the team led 5-0 at the half.
During halftime, the team recognized some of its alumni as the program is in its 10th season as part NCAA Division II and the Mountain East Conference.
In the second half,
Ashleigh Weaver continued the scoring as a penalty kick was awarded to Fairmont State.
Ashleigh Weaver burined the attempt into the bottom left of the goal. The final goal of the contest as
Amanda Weaver headed home the corner kick from
Tristen Bright.
The Falcons totaled 45 shots with 26 of them on goal while holding the Tigers shotless. The home squad also had seven corner kicks on the afternoon.
Fairmont State (3-1-1) hits the road on Wednesday, September 25 as it faces MEC newcomers, Point Park University. Start time from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is set for 5:00 p.m.
