Falcons Battle in Final Two Matches of Home Volleyball Classic

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University volleyball team played its final two matches of its own Volleyball Classic from Joe Retton Arena. The Falcons opened the day with a 3-0 sweep of Bloomsburg before falling to Slippery Rock in the final match, 3-1.

Match 1: Fairmont State 3, Bloomsburg 0

The Falcons offensive attack had a strong showing in the first match of day two of the home classic. Baylie Ostvig led the way with 16 kills with an additional 13 from Joey Borelle. Kelsie Dangerfield picked up 21 assists as Belle DeVall had 14 while defensively, Josie Skinn totaled 12 digs as Borelle completed the double-double with 10 digs.

Early in the first set, the two teams were evenly matched as the score was tied at nine. Fairmont State then took over with a 12-2 run with four kills from Ostvig. Trailing 21-11, Bloomsburg started to pick up some momentum as it used a run of its own and closed the difference to four (23-19). However, a Huskies error along with a block by Alexa Martin closed out the set, 25-19.

The Falcons opened the second set with five quick points as all six players on the court contributed. The two teams started to go back and forth until the Huskies started to close the gap and trailed only by one (16-15). Fairmont State regained control of the set with help from Borelle's three kills. Leading 24-18, Borelle put the final mark on the set with a kill off the pass from Dangerfield.

The third set was controlled by Fairmont State from the start. The closest Bloomsburg got to the Falcons was a five-point differential with the home team taking the set, 25-12, and the match, 3-0.

Match 2: Slippery Rock 3, Fairmont State 1

Where the first match of the day was mainly controlled by the Falcons, the second was more of a tug-of-war between the home team and Slippery Rock. In the opening set, neither squad held more than a two-point lead. Late in the set, Fairmont State was able to even the set and eventually take the lead, 21-20. Unfortunately, SRU won four-straight points and eventually closed out the set, 25-22.

Slippery Rock grasped early control of the second set and did no seem to slow down. At one point, the visitors held a 10-point advantage (21-11) but the Falcons were not going away. The team went on a 6-1 run with key plays from Chloe McDaniel and Natalie Zemba. Trailing 22-17, Fairmont State traded points until it won back-to-back and pulled within four but the deficit was too large as Slippery Rock won the set, 25-20.

In the third set, started similarly to the first with both teams exchanging points until the Falcons seized the set. The team went on a 13-3 run to open a 20-11 lead as Adella Rodriguez and Josie Nobbe strung together a six of the points. The Rock tried to piece together a comeback but were unable to do so as the Falcons won the set, 25-17 and forced a fourth set.

Opening of the fourth set was primarily all Slippery Rock as it jumped out to a 5-0 lead held a multiple point lead until Fairmont State notched five-straight and made it a 16-15 game. Unfortunately, SRU wasted little time and regained momentum and closed out the set and the match on a 9-2 run.

Borelle and Nobbe each had 13 kills in the match while Borelle had 21 digs behind the 27 from Josie Skinn. Dangerfield assisted on 28 of the points while Martin tallied five blocks at the net.
