Falcons Pick Up 42-point Win in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Fairmont State University women's basketball team faced the Point Park University Pioneers in a Mountain East Conference matchup. The Falcons were able to dispatch the Pioneers on the way to a 91-49 victory.

The matchup was the first time the two teams have met since 1984 as the Falcons now hold a 12-0 record over the Pioneers. Alyssa DeAngelo led all scorers with 24 points, as she went 8-10 from the field and 3-4 from three-point range. Leslie Huffman scored 14 points with 12 points from Madeline Huffman and Aaliyah Brunny.

Madeline Huffman got the game going with a layup before Point Park (3-11, 2-7) quickly answered. Fairmont State (12-3, 7-2) started to take control of the game with seven-straight points as Leslie Huffman accounted for four of them. The Pioneers tried to chip away at the deficit but the Falcons had an answer most of the way. Within the final two minutes, the hosts scored seven of the final nine points as FSU led 22-15 going to the second period.

In the second, the Falcons kept the pressure up as they scored the first six points with four from Alyssa DeAngelo. Both teams settled in defensively as they only allowed two points each. With 4:11 left in the first half, Fairmont State held a 30-17 lead. Over the final four minutes, the visitors outscored Point Park, 14-5 including a buzzer beater at the half. At the break, the Falcons led 44-22.

Just like the first two periods, Fairmont State opened the third with a 10-2 run as DeAngelo continued her strong performance with seven of those points. The Pioneers attempted to trim away at the difference but the Falcons were too strong on both ends of the floor. At the end of the third, FSU held a 32-point lead, 69-37.

The Falcons kept a firm grasp on the game as they outscored the hosts 14-6 in the first five minutes. The maroon and white were able to cruise its way to the 32-point victory.

As a team, FSU shot 53.4-percent from the field (31-58) and made 23 of its 28 free throw attempts. The Falcons also won the battle on the boards, 46-42.

Fairmont State welcomes Salem University to campus on Saturday, January 18. Start time is set for 2:00 p.m.
