Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Falcons with a Commanding Win Over Concord

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The 25th-ranked Fairmont State University women's basketball team looked to seek revenge for a loss earlier this season against Concord University. The Falcons did just that including a 20-2 second period on the way to an 84-57 victory.

The reigning MEC Player of the Week, Jalen Gibbs led the Falcons with 15 points and nine rebounds. The team also received double-digit point performances from Leslie Huffman (14), Zaniya Murray (13) and Gabby Reep (10).

Concord (8-11, 5-7) opened the game with the first points before Alyssa DeAngelo quickly evened the score. Bre Wilson then gave Fairmont State (16-3, 10-2) the lead with a three off a Madeline Huffman pass. The two sides exchanged the lead before the Falcons went on a 13-2 run to hold a 20-10 advantage with 2:55 left in the first. The Mountain Lions tried to trim the difference but by the end of the first, the hosts led by 11 (26-15).

In the second period, Jalen Gibbs quickly made a layup before Concord answered with one of its own. From there, it was all FSU as it scored the remaining 18 points of the period. Headed into halftime, the Falcons led 46-17.

Out of the locker room, the pace quickened as both teams found their flow on the offensive end. The Mountain Lions tried to trim at the deficit but the Falcons had an answer each tim down the floor. In the third, both teams scored 20 points as FSU led by 29 (66-37) going to the final period of regulation.

Both squads were fairly even for the first four minutes of the period. In the middle of the quarter, Fairmont State went on a 11-0 stretch to extend the lead to 36 (82-46). Concord was able to stop the run and go on a run of its own to close out the game but the difference was too large as the Falcons won by 27 points.

The Falcons dominated the paint with 44 points with a total of 31 points coming from the bench. On the glass, FSU won the battle with 47 rebounds compared to 35 for the visitors.

Fairmont State will kick off a short two-game road stretch on Saturday, February 1 at Glenville State University. Start time is set for 2:00 p.m.
