Three Goals in Five Minutes Propels Women's Soccer Over Charleston

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Fairmont State surged past the University of Charleston with a 3-1 victory on Wednesday at Duvall-Rosier Field. After a scoreless first half, the Falcons capitalized with three second-half goals on 19 total shots, nine of which were on target. The Golden Eagles managed a single goal despite their eight shots. Fairmont State's defensive efforts were highlighted by three crucial saves from their goalkeeper.

The first half began with Fairmont State establishing an early defensive presence as goalkeeper Olivia Johnston recorded a key save against Charleston in the 10th minute. The home team responded with an offensive push, including a notable attempt by Montserrat Diaz that required a save from the opposing goalkeeper. Despite several shots on goal and a corner kick opportunity, the Falcons were unable to convert.

Throughout the half, Fairmont State's defense remained solid, limiting Charleston's scoring chances while maintaining pressure on the offensive end. Serenity Thomas made a significant attempt in the 24th minute, but the score remained unchanged. The half concluded with both teams locked in a scoreless draw, indicating a tightly contested match heading into the next half.

The second half saw a significant momentum shift as the Falcons initiated a series of offensive plays. After Charleston opened the scoring with a goal by Allison Freese in the 59th minute, Fairmont State responded with a rapid offensive surge. After a wild sequence of shots that were saved and hit off the post, Diaz scored on the rebound to the Falcons ahead in the 70th minute.

The home team continued to capitalize on their momentum with Valentina Gianinetto extending the lead in the 73rd minute, assisted by Arrington Sparks. Fairmont State maintained their defensive discipline, with Johnston making critical saves to keep the score intact. The half closed with the Falcons holding a 3-1 lead over Charleston.

Stalhammar scored one goal and added three shots, with one on target, contributing to the team's attack. Gianinetto also found the back of the net, leading the team with four shots, three of which were on goal. Diaz secured the game-winning goal, tallying five shots with two on goal. Sparks provided an assist, enhancing the team's offensive efforts. Johnston made three saves over 90 minutes, allowing just one goal in the match.
