Fairmont State Holds Point Park to Two Shots on Goal in Road Shutout

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Fairmont State University secured a 2-0 victory over Point Park University on Wednesday at Highmark Stadium. Fairmont State took the lead with a goal in the first half and added another in the second. The defense held strong, allowing only two shots on goal, and the goalkeeper recorded a shutout with two saves.

The first half began with Fairmont State taking early control, as Arrington Sparks initiated a series of attempts on goal, including one saved by Point Park's goalkeeper Frederieke Rijlaarsdam. Despite these early efforts, it was Montserrat Diaz who broke the deadlock in the 27th minute, scoring on a free kick to give the Falcons the lead. Diaz's goal followed persistent pressure and several shots that tested the Pioneers' defense.

Fairmont State maintained offensive momentum throughout the half, with additional shot attempts by players including Ava Yannucci and Payton Parliament. The defensive line, led by goalkeeper Olivia Johnston, remained steadfast, preventing any goals from Point Park. As the half closed, the Falcons held a 1-0 lead.

The second half began with the Falcons maintaining pressure on the Pioneers' defense. Valentina Gianinetto had multiple attempts, including a blocked shot and others saved by the opposition's goalkeeper. Braylyn Sparks also saw a shot saved, showcasing a persistent offensive effort.

Midway through the half, the Falcons broke through in the 78th minute when Gianinetto scored with an assist from Sparks, extending their lead. Johnston made key saves to keep the Pioneers at bay, allowing the Falcons to close the half with a 2-0 advantage.

Gianinetto led the Falcons with one goal on five shots, two of which were on target. Diaz scored the game-winning goal, converting both her shot attempts. Sparks contributed with an assist and registered two shots, one of which was on goal. Goalkeeper Johnston secured a shutout with two saves over 90 minutes, maintaining a clean sheet against six shots faced.
