Diaz Scores Twice to Propel Women's Soccer to MEC Championship

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Fairmont State emerged victorious over Concord with a 2-1 win on Wednesday at Duvall-Rosier Field in the Mountain East Conference Tournament Semifinal. The home team took the lead early in the first half, and although Concord equalized before halftime, Fairmont State secured the win with a decisive second-half goal.

The first half commenced with Fairmont State establishing an early advantage. Montserrat Diaz found the back of the net in the 9th minute, giving the home team an initial 1-0 lead. The Falcons maintained pressure with several offensive opportunities, including a corner kick and shots from Filippa Stalhammar and Valentina Gianinetto.

The Mountain Lions responded in the 25th minute when Tiana Campbell scored, assisted by Stephanie Tovar, leveling the score at 1-1. Olivia Johnston's key save in the 31st minute kept the game even as Concord pressed with multiple shots and corner kicks. The first half concluded with the teams tied at 1-1, setting the stage for a competitive second half.

The second half commenced with Fairmont State's Olivia Johnston making a crucial save against Concord's Katie Garratt shortly after play resumed. The Falcons maintained offensive pressure, with Montserrat Diaz and Dayra Dinarte making attempts on goal, although the Mountain Lions' Maddie Loughborough thwarted these shots.

Momentum shifted in the Falcons' favor in the 76th minute when Diaz found the back of the net again, breaking the deadlock and putting the home team ahead. Despite the Mountain Lions' efforts to equalize, including a saved attempt by Campbell, the Falcons' defense, anchored by Johnston, held firm. Fairmont State secured the one-goal victory and punched its ticket to the MEC Tournament  Championship.

Diaz scored two goals, including the game-winner, while taking three shots in the match. Johnston recorded five saves, facing 15 shots and allowing one goal in 90 minutes of play. Dinarte added pressure on the opposing defense with three shots, two of which were on target. Stalhammar contributed with two shots, maintaining a consistent presence in the attack.

Fairmont State (15-1-3) will host the University of Charleston for the MEC Championship on Sunday, November 16. Start time for the match will be 1:00 p.m.
