CALIFORNIA, Pa. — Fairmont State University (3-0, 0-0 MEC) defeated California University of Pennsylvania (2-4, 0-0 PSAC), 75-71, at the Cal U Convocation Center, capitalizing on 20 points off turnovers.
Fairmont State opened the game with an assertive start, capitalizing on California's turnovers to build an early 6–0 lead, highlighted by
Leslie Huffman's fastbreak layup at 8:31. The visitors maintained their momentum through consistent scoring in the paint, with
Zaniya Murray and
Gabby Reep contributing key baskets. Despite the Vulcans' late efforts to close the gap, the Falcons led 19–16 at the end of the first period.
The Falcons sparked a significant run midway through the second period, with
Leila Jones hitting consecutive 3-pointers, extending their lead to 32–26 at 6:12. Murray added a layup on a fast break to maintain momentum. However, the Vulcans responded, tying the game 36–36 with a layup by Kennedy Bankett at the last second. The period ended with both teams locked in a tight contest, each scoring 36 points.
The Falcons found momentum midway through the third period with Reep's steal at 6:40, leading to Murray's layup that tied the game at 40. Huffman played a pivotal role in the closing moments, securing a steal and converting a fast-break layup with under a minute remaining, putting Fairmont State ahead 54-53. The third ended with the Falcons narrowly leading, 54-53, setting up a tense final quarter.
Fairmont State began the fourth with a critical 3-pointer by Jones at 9:34, giving them a brief lead. Huffman played a pivotal role, contributing consistently with multiple baskets and free throws, including two crucial free throws at 1:20 that extended their lead. Despite efforts from the Vulcans to keep the game close, the Falcons capitalized on key opportunities, particularly at the free-throw line, to maintain their advantage. The Falcons were able to hold off the hosts and secure the 75–71 victory.
Huffman led the Falcons with 26 points, connecting on 9 of 21 field goals and adding seven rebounds. Murray contributed 12 points and recorded two steals. Jones added 11 points, including three successful 3-pointers. Reep finished with nine points and collected six rebounds, while also tallying two steals.
Fairmont State will open its home portion of the schedule on Saturday, November 22 to face Bloomsburg University. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
