Team Effort Fuels Women's Basketball's 20-Point Win

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Fairmont State (5-1) defeated Shepherd (2-3), 83-63, at Joe Retton Arena, capitalizing on Shepherd's 26 turnovers and scoring 25 points off those errors. Fairmont State also showcased a strong team performance with 20 assists and 35 bench points.

Fairmont State began the game with a strong defensive pressure that led to an early 5-0 run, highlighted by Leila Jones' 3-pointer at 9:35 and a subsequent steal. Taking advantage of Shepherd's turnovers, the Falcons continued to build their lead with fast-break points, including a layup by Gabby Reep at 7:59. Shepherd struggled to maintain possession, resulting in seven turnovers and limited offensive opportunities. Fairmont State capitalized on these chances to finish the quarter ahead 18-10.

Fairmont State seized momentum early in the second quarter with a 15–2 run, highlighted by Jones' two 3-pointers, widening their lead significantly. Reep contributed vital assists, setting up Jones and Zaniya Murray for key baskets. Despite turnovers, the Falcons maintained control with effective rebounding and efficient shooting, leading 43–28 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Falcons maintained control, highlighted by Murray's fast-break layup at 6:39, extending their lead to 50–35. Alanna Tate and Reep contributed significantly, with Tate hitting a jumper at 1:40 and Reep assisting on multiple plays. The Rams struggled to keep pace despite attempts from Kara Wehner and Trinity Turner. Fairmont State closed the quarter strong, leading 64–45.

Fairmont State maintained their lead in the final quarter with a strong performance in the paint, scoring 12 points there. Mackenzie Swayne contributed significantly with a defensive rebound followed by a successful layup at 8:55, assisted by Leslie Huffman. Despite the Rams' attempts to close the gap, Fairmont St. secured their advantage with clutch free throws by Hadley Horne at 5:33 and a layup by Haylen Cook at 2:25.

Gabby Reep added to Fairmont State's momentum by converting two late free throws with 25 seconds remaining, effectively sealing the game. Fairmont State limited Shepherd to 18 points in the quarter, closing out the game with a final score of 83-63.

Reep recorded seven rebounds and contributed five assists while collecting two steals. Cook led the scoring with 15 points, converting two 3-pointers and all three free-throw attempts. Murray added 12 points, posted five assists, and tallied three steals. Jones matched Cook with 15 points, making three shots from beyond the arc and collecting two steals.

Fairmont State opens Mountain East Conference play on Wednesday, December 3 at Davis & Elkins College. Start time is set for 5:30 p.m.
