Falcons Advance to the MEC Semifinals with Shutout of the Pioneers

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Fairmont State secured a decisive 3-0 victory over Glenville State on Sunday in the Mountain East Conference Quarterfinals. The Falcons dominated the match with 27 shots, 15 of which were on target.

The first half started with Fairmont State establishing early offensive pressure, creating several opportunities, including a shot by Braylyn Sparks in the opening minutes. The Falcons continued to press forward, with Filippa Stalhammar and Valentina Gianinetto contributing to multiple shots and corner kicks. This early momentum culminated in a goal by Emelly Chicas, assisted by Gianinetto, in the 21st minute, putting the Falcons ahead.

The Falcons maintained their offensive push throughout the half, with numerous attempts by Sparks, Payton Parliament, and Tatiana Mayumi, all testing the Pioneers' defense. Anjolie Colon, the Pioneers' goalkeeper, made several key saves to prevent further scoring. The half concluded with the Falcons leading 1-0, demonstrating a strong attacking presence while holding the Pioneers scoreless.

The second half commenced with the Falcons maintaining pressure from the onset. By the 57th minute, Gianinetto capitalized on an assist from Montserrat Diaz, extending the lead to 2-0. This goal shifted the momentum firmly in the Falcons' favor.

The Falcons continued to dominate offensively, with multiple attempts on goal saved by the Pioneers' Anjolie Colon. The persistence paid off late in the half when Sparks, assisted by Diaz, found the back of the net in the 89th minute, sealing a decisive 3-0 victory.

Sparks scored one goal and registered four shots, with two on target. Gianinetto contributed both a goal and an assist, tallying three points from three shots, two of which were on goal. Diaz provided two assists and attempted four shots, two on goal. Chicas secured the game-winning goal with her only shot on target. Lianna Albert kept a clean sheet in goal, facing just one shot throughout the match.

Fairmont State (14-1-3) will now host Concord University for the MEC Semifinals on Wednesday, November 12. Start time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
