FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Fairmont State (8-2, 4-1 MEC) fell to Concord(7-3, 5-0 MEC), 95-87, in a competitive matchup at Joe Retton Arena.
The first half commenced with Fairmont State quickly establishing rhythm through effective scoring in the paint, highlighted by
Rene Diop's layup in the opening seconds.
Miguel Martinez's offensive contributions, including an early three-pointer, helped maintain the lead despite Concord's attempts to close the gap.
Fairmont State maintained momentum with strategic assists and defensive rebounds, effectively countering Concord's offensive efforts.
Drey Carter further extended the lead with consistent points in the paint. The half concluded with the Falcons holding a 41-37 advantage, setting a competitive tone for the remainder of the game.
Fairmont State began the second half by conceding a quick 3-pointer, but quickly countered with free throws from
Drey Carter. The teams exchanged leads multiple times, with the Falcons briefly pulling ahead on a 3-pointer by
CJ Meredith at 13:04. Despite strong efforts, including a fast-break dunk from Carter at 7:23, Fairmont State found themselves trailing after a series of turnovers and missed opportunities.
As the half progressed, Fairmont State managed to keep the contest tight, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Martinez that cut the deficit to two. However, Concord capitalized on free throws and scoring in the paint, extending their lead in the closing moments. The half ended with the Falcons trailing 58-46, as the Mountain Lions outscored them by 12 points in the second half, taking control of the game.
Drey Carter led the Falcons with 23 points, adding six free throws and collecting 11 rebounds. Martinez contributed significantly with 19 points, including five 3-pointers, and recorded three assists.
CJ Meredith added 15 points while converting all four of his free throws.
Rene Diop was a defensive presence with six blocks, complementing his six points.
Fairmont State hosts Waynesburg University in a non-conference battle on Tuesday, December 30. Game is slated to start at 2:00 p.m.
