Falcons Secure 90-78 Win Over West Virginia Wesleyan

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Fairmont State (7-1, 2-0 MEC) defeated West Virginia Wesleyan (2-2, 1-1 MEC), 90-78, at Joe Retton Arena, capitalizing on 24 offensive rebounds and 15 steals to secure the conference victory.

The game began with West Virginia Wesleyan opening the scoring, but Fairmont State responded quickly. Leslie Huffman led a significant surge for Fairmont State, hitting three 3-pointers, with two assists credited to Gabby Reep and Zaniya Murray, to help build an early lead. The Falcons capitalized on turnovers, with Reep also contributing a steal and fast-break opportunities. Despite a resilient effort from the Bobcats, the Falcons maintained control and ended the first quarter ahead, 26–19.

Fairmont State extended its lead in the second quarter with a decisive offensive performance, highlighted by a 10-2 run. Leslie Huffman initiated the momentum with a three-pointer at 9:07, aided by Gabby Reep's assist, which was part of her period-high contributions in assists and steals. The Falcons capitalized on West Virginia Wesleyan's turnovers, with Haylen Cook scoring on a fast-break layup following a steal at 6:51.

Ryan Davis added to Fairmont State's advantage with 10 points in the quarter, including a layup at 5:22 to maintain the home team's lead. The Falcons outscored the Bobcats 23-15 in the second quarter, concluding the first half with a 49-34 lead.

Fairmont State extended their lead significantly in the third quarter, fueled by a series of crucial plays. Leila Jones opened the quarter with a 3-pointer at 9:52, and Leslie Huffman contributed key assists, including one to Gabby Reep for a 3-pointer at 7:22. Huffman's two successful free throws at 5:31, followed by a layup at 4:26, further solidified their momentum. 

Despite West Virginia. Wesleyan's efforts to stay competitive with consistent scoring in the paint, the Falcons maintained control. Ryan Davis's layup at 3:31, assisted by Reep, and Alanna Tate's jumper in the final minute ensured the Falcons held a steady pace. The quarter concluded with the Falcons leading 74–55, signaling their strong position in the game.

The game concluded with the Falcons securing a 90-78 victory.

Leslie Huffman led with 27 points, making 5 of 10 from beyond the arc, and added six assists and four steals. Gabby Reep contributed 14 points and delivered nine assists while collecting seven rebounds. Haylen Cook scored 11 points and recorded four steals. Alanna Tate added 10 points, recording three steals and seven rebounds.

Fairmont State hits the road on Wednesday, December 10 to face Glenville State University. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
