WHEELING, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's basketball team looked to bounce back following Saturday's loss. The Falcons did just that with a road win over Wheeling University, 74-60.
Alyssa DeAngelo led all players with 27 points as she went 5-8 from three and going 6-7 at the free throw line.
Leslie Huffman added 25 points while she also grabbed nine rebounds.Â
Both teams exchanged free throws to start the game before Fairmont State (19-4, 13-3) rattled off the next 11 points as
Leslie Huffman went 3-3 from beyond the arc. Wheeling (13-10, 9-6) made another free throw as the Falcons continued their run to hold an 18-2 lead with just over two minutes left in the period. The Cardinals notched the four of the final five points as FSU led by 13 (19-6) going to the second.
In the second period, the two teams were evenly matched as the Falcons were able to maintain the double-digit advantage. Over the final 2:40 of the first half, Wheeling got on a roll as it scored 10-straight points including two three-point shots. At the break, Fairmont State remained just ahead, 27-22.
Out of the locker room, the two squads came out firing. Fairmont State was able to slowly stretch the lead to 11 (44-33) with 3:20 on the clock. The hosts were able to cut the margin to six but
Alyssa DeAngelo dropped four-straight points to hand the Falcons a 50-40 advantage going to the final 10 minutes of regulation.
Early in the fourth, Wheeling quickly scored the first four points and were able to stay within just a few shots. Midway through the period, FSU went on a 10-0 run to extend the difference back to double digits (66-50) with 3:41 to go. During the run, half of the points were scored by
Leslie Huffman. In the final minutes, the Falcons were perfect from the free throw line as they made all eight attempts to secure the 14-point victory.
For the evening, the Falcons shot 46.3-percent from the field (25-54) and were 14-18 from the charity stripe. In the fourth period alone, the team made all nine of their free throws.Â
Fairmont State welcomes West Liberty University on Saturday, February 15 for a big afternoon as the team will be honoring its seniors along with alumni. Start time is set for 2:00 p.m.
