FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's basketball team hosted West Liberty University in Moutain East Conference play. The Falcons pulled away from the Hilltoppers to take home the win, 94-60.
Prior to the game, the program honored its five seniors:
Aaliyah Brunny,
Alyssa DeAngelo,
Jalen Gibbs,
Madeline Huffman and
Bre Wilson.
Leslie Huffman led all scorers with 24 points as she eclipsed the 1,000-point mark in her career.
Jalen Gibbs added 18 points while grabbing 12 rebounds.
Gabby Reep and
Leila Jones scored double-digit points with 12 and 11, respectively.
To start the game, the two sides were evenly matched until West Liberty (8-16, 6-11) opened a four-point lead (15-11) with 4:36 left in the first. Fairmont State (20-4, 14-3) slowly chipped away at the deficit before a 9-0 run to close out the period. Going to the second, the Falcons led 24-19.
In the second, FSU opened with a seven of the next nine points to extend the advantage to 10 (31-21). The Hilltoppers were able to slowly climb back into the contest and scored the final five points. At the half, the Falcons still held a four-point lead, 37-33.
Quickly out of the gate, Fairmont State scored the first six points with four of them from
Leslie Huffman. West Liberty attempted slow the run with a three but the hosts responded with the next 15 points. At the 3:50-mark of the third, the Falcons led by 22 (58-36). FSU kept growing the advantage and led 73-46 as the game ventured to the final 10 minutes of regulation.
The fourth period was very similar to the third with the hosts expanding their advantage and cruise to the 34-point victory. As a team, the Falcons forced 41 turnovers and converted them into 42 points. In the paint, FSU also scored 48 points in the paint.
Fairmont State remains at home to entertain Point Park University on Wednesday, February 19. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
