Fairmont State Clinches MEC Regular Season Title

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The 24th-ranked Fairmont State University women's basketball team faced Point Park University in its penultimate home game. The Falcons were able defeat the Pioneers, 70-61 and clinched the Mountain East Conference regular season crown.

Leslie Huffman had a strong performance with 29 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Alyssa DeAngelo added 18 points as she went 10-11 from the free throw line.

Fairmont State (21-4, 15-3) raced out to an early 5-0 lead but Point Park (8-16, 6-12) slowly battled back and eventually made it a one-point game, 10-9. The Falcons quickly regained control of the game by scoring the next six points. The Pioneers slightly trimmed the deficit as it was 18-14 going to the second period.

In the second period, the two teams were evenly match as the difference rarely changed. With just over three minutes left in half, Leslie Huffman scored five-consecutive points to hand FSU a 33-24 lead. Point Park made it a seven-point game on separate occasions as the hosts led 35-28 going to the locker room. In the period, the Falcons scored 17 points with 13 of them coming from Huffman.

The third period began with Fairmont State being able to grow the lead to 10 at different points including a 42-32 advantage with 6:17 on the clock. However, the Pioneers did not fade away and battled all the way back to even the score at 48. Two free throws by Alyssa DeAngelo inside the final minute gave the Falcons a 50-48 edge going to the final 10 minutes of regulation.

Point Park swiftly erased the difference and tied the game once more but FSU had an answer as DeAngelo scored the next five points. The visitors remained just a couple of shots back before a 6-0 run by the Falcons made it a 65-56 advantage. The home side held on to the lead and a late three by Aaliyah Brunny sealed the win and the regular season title.

The Falcons were effective in transition as they scored 17 points off 20 Point Park turnovers. FSU also received 16 points from its bench as Aaliyah Brunny led the way with eight points.

Fairmont State travels to nearby Salem University on Saturday, February 22 to face the Tigers. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
