FSU Goes 1-1 in Final Series in North Carolina

MURFREESBORO, N.C. -- The Fairmont State University softball team wrapped its weekend trip to North Carolina against Chowan University. The Falcons fell in game one, 7-0, before responding with a 4-0 win in game two.

Game 1: Chowan 7, Fairmont State 0

Chowan got on the board early with an RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the first. In the second inning, the hosts added to its lead with another RBI single.

As Fairmont State struggled to get anything going offensively, the Hawks kept expanding their lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth. Chowan broke open its advantage in the fifth inning as it scored four runs on a couple of hits and errors. As the game ventured to the sixth inning, the Hawks led 7-0.

The Falcons were unsuccessful in their comeback attempt as they only mustered up two hits in the final two innings while leaving a total of three runners stranded.

Game 2: Fairmont State 4, Chowan 0

The second game was a pitching dual as both teams combined for several hits over the first four innings but each time left runners on base in scoring position.

It took until the top of the fifth when Fairmont State broke the scoreless tie. With two outs in frame, Emma Paul drove a ball down the left field line as Alyssa McCormick and Bella Hess scored to give FSU a 2-0 lead.

From there, Caitlin Morey held the Hawks to just one base runner over the next two innings while striking out two more batters. In the top of the seventh, Bella Hess laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached on a throwing error. As the ball ricocheted in foul territory, Grace Sobeck raced home to add to the Falcons advantage.

After Hess moved to third on a ground ball, Paul stepped into the box and delivered once more with an RBI single through the left side. Chowan threatened to score in the bottom half as it had runners on second and third with one out. However, Delaney Haller took over the pitching duties in the seventh and forced a line out followed by a ground ball to close out the game.

Morey picked up the win for the Falcons as she went six innings and allowed just five hits while striking out nine. At the plate, Paul was 2-4 and drove in three of the teams four runs.

Fairmont State (2-2) will take the next week to prepare for its next doubleheader on Tuesday, March 4 at Seton Hill University. Game one is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
