Falcons Fall to Pace

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University softball team opened the home portion of its schedule against Pace University. The Falcons fell in both games to the Setters, 3-1 and 9-1.

Game 1: Pace 3, Fairmont State 1

In the first frame of the opening game, Pace got the scoring started with an RBI single through the right side. The visitors were able to work runners to second and third with two outs but Alyssa McCormick forced a ground ball to end the inning.

Fairmont State had an opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the second with a runner on third with just one out. Unfortunately, the team was not able to push the run across. However, the Setters added to their lead in the top of the third with double to centerfield.

Both pitchers found a groove as no more runs were scored as the game ventured to the top of the sixth. In the frame, the visitors increased its lead to three with another run scoring single, this time to left field.

The next two half innings, the two squads went down in order as the Falcons looked to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Kae Compton drove in Emma Paul with a single to left field but that was the extent of the rally as Pace claimed the game by a two-run difference.

Game 2: Pace 9, Fairmont State 1 (6 Inn.)

Game two started with both teams having several opportunities to score a run but each time the starting pitcher shutdown the chance.

As the game ventured into the fifth inning, it remained scoreless until the Setters crossed home first with an RBI single. However, in the bottom half, Bella Hess drove a ball into left field to bring home Gabi Ramm to even the score at one.

Unfortunately, in the top of the sixth, Pace took control of the game. The visitors scored eight runs on eight hits including two home runs. Down to their final three outs, the Falcons were unable to produce a base runner as they fell in the six-inning affair.

Fairmont State (2-4) heads to Greensburg, Pennsylvania on Tuesday, March 4 for a doubleheader against Seton Hill University. Game one is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
