GREENSBURG, Pa. -- The Fairmont State University softball team hit the road to face Seton Hill University. The Falcons were able to sweep the Griffins, 6-2 and 11-2.
Game 1: Fairmont State 6, Seton Hill 2
Fairmont State quickly got on the board in the first inning when
Jaylin McGill drew a walk with the bases loaded as
Bella Hess scored. The very next at-bat,
Delaney Haller grounded out to third but the play allowed
Elizabeth Waszkiewicz to score and give the team a 2-0 lead.
Seton Hill threatened to score in the first and second innings but each time the Falcons were able to force the final out and leave runners on the bases. In the top of the third, FSU had a chance to add to its lead with a runner on third with two outs. Haller was able to deliver in the spot with a double to left center to bring home Waszkiewicz once more.Â
Leading 3-0, Fairmont State was able to maintain the advantage until the bottom of the fifth when the Griffins scored two runs on consecutive RBI singles to the outfield. However, the Falcons answered in the top of the sixth when two more runs scored on an error by the left fielder.Â
In the bottom half of the frame, besides a lone walk, Haller struck out the side to preserve the three-run advantage. In the top of the seventh, Fairmont State added an insurance run as
Kae Compton scored on a throwing error. Down to its final three outs, Seton Hill tried to get something going on offense but after a lead off single, Haller struck out the next two batters and forced a ground ball to secure the win.
From the circle, Haller pitched a complete game, allowing just two runs (unearned) on six hits while also striking out another six. At the plate, she was 1-3 with two runs batted in while Hess went 2-4 and scored twice.
Game 2: Fairmont State 11, Seton Hill 2 (6 Inn.)
In game two, it was the hosts who got the first inning lead with an RBI single followed by a sacrifice fly. The Griffins held the two-run lead until the top of the fifth when Hess drove a ball into left field to bring home
Alexa Andrews.
Breonna Marietta followed with an RBI single of her own to even the score at two.
Later in the fifth inning, Waszkiewicz hit a triple down the right field line as
Emma Paul and
Grace Sobeck crossed home to give the Falcons the lead. During the next at-bat, Waszkiewicz was able to score on a wild pitch to make a 5-2 game in favor of FSU.
After a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth, Fairmont State went back to work with the bats as
Abbie Keilholz doubled to right center to drive in Andrews. Keilholz then scored on another RBI double, this time off the bat of Hess. Marietta kept the hitting barrage going with a two-run homer over the right center wall to make it a 9-2 game. However, the Falcons were not done as
Emma Paul joined the party a solo shot down the left field line.
The six-run inning concluded when
