FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University baseball team hosted Clarion University for a mid-week matchup. The Falcons fell to the Golden Eagles, 11-4.
Neither team was able to push a run across in the first inning but Clarion scored the first runs in the top of the second. With three-straight singles to the outfield followed by a sacrifice fly, the visitors put up four runs.
In the bottom half of the inning, Fairmont State got on the board when
Ryan Goff singled to right center to bring home
Zach Brennan. Two at-bats later,
Gage Bibey hit a ground ball to push Goff across and make it a 4-2 game.
The score remained untouched despite both teams having opportunities in the next couple of innings. In the top of the sixth, the Golden Eagles scored on a wild pitch before adding another run thanks to a single to center field. Later in the frame, the visitors plated one more run to lead 7-2.
Over the next three innings, Clarion added four more runs as it now led 11-2 going to the bottom of the ninth. Down to its final three outs, the Falcons attempted a comeback as two runs scored on a play where
Cameron Moore reached on a fielder's choice. Unfortunately, the rally ended there as FSU dropped the home contest.
Fairmont State (6-6) will now face Glenville State University on Friday, March 14 to open Mountain East Conference play. Game one from Glenville, West Virginia is set for 1:00 p.m.
