Baseball Sweeps Conference Opener

GLENVILLE, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University baseball team faced Glenville State University to open Mountain East Conference play. The Falcons swept the Pioneers on the day with scores of 15-2 and 9-1.

Game 1: Fairmont State 15, Glenville State 2

Fairmont State took the early lead in the top of the first when Zach Brennan doubled to left center to bring home Quintin Smith. Quintin Reep followed with a double of his own to drive in Brennan. Reep them scored when Ryan Goff was able to reach on an error. 

Trailing 3-0, Glenville State put up a run in the bottom half of the first thanks to a solo home run over the right field wall. The Falcons maintained the 3-1 lead until the bottom of the fourth where the Pioneers added another run thanks to an RBI single to left field.

In the top of the fifth, FSU was able to get runners in scoring position with two outs. Goff stepped to the plate and delivered a blast over the left center wall to make it a 6-2 lead in favor of the visitors.

Fairmont State sealed the game in the sixth inning when it scored eight runs on five hits and an error to hold a 12-run advantage (14-2). Noah Canterbury notched the final run of the game in the seventh with a solo shot down the right field line. 

Micah Canterbury picked up the win on the mound for the Falcons. He went five innings and allowed just two runs on five hits while also striking out seven. Reep went a perfect 3-3 from the plate with three RBIs and scoring another three runs.

Game 2: Fairmont State 9, Glenville State 1

In the second game, Glenville State scored the games first run in the bottom of the first with a ground ball to second base. The Falcons trailed by the lone run until the top of the fourth when Brennan lifted a ball over the left field wall to even the score at one.

The game remained tied at one until the top of the seventh when Brennan doubled to left field to bring home Quintin Smith and Connor Bailey to take a 3-1 lead. Reep followed with a sacrifice fly as Tyler Wilkinson was able to tag and score.

Goff kept the inning going with an RBI double to right center as Brennan crossed homeplate. Tyler Haskins got in the action as he singled to right field with Goff being able to score. The scoring wrapped up when Maddox Johnston hit a three-run homer over right center to make it a 9-1 contest.

Andrew Coursin came in for the seventh inning and after allowing a lead-off single, forced three-straight outs to complete the sweep.

Brennan was 3-3 in the box as he drove in three runs and scored two more. Goff was the other Falcon with multiple hits as he drove in and scored a run.

Fairmont State (8-6, 2-0) will face Concord University on Saturday, March 15 to continue conference play. Game one is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
