ATHENS, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University baseball team faced Concord University in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader. The Falcons claimed the first game, 12-9 before falling in the second game, 11-0.
Game 1: Fairmont State 12, Concord 9
Tyler Haskins gave Fairmont State the early lead with an RBI single to centerfield in the second inning. In the third inning,
Zach Brennan drove in
Quintin Smith with a double to right.
Ryan Goff followed with a single through the left side to bring home Brennan as the Falcons led 3-0.
Concord got on the board in the bottom half of the third thanks to a sacrifice fly. FSU grew its lead in the top of the fourth when Smith delivered a base hit to score
Gunner Riley. Brennan drove in another run with a single up the middle before
Quintin Reep cleared the bases with a double to make it a 7-1 game. Goff finished the scoring in the inning with a double to right center as Reep crossed the plate.
Trialing 8-1, it took until the bottom of the sixth for the Mountain Lions to add two more runs with a homer to straight-away center. In the top of the seventh,
Noah Canterbury drove in two runs with a single through the right side. After a wild pitch and a walk, Reep hit his second bases clearing double as the Falcons now led 12-3 going to the bottom of the seventh.
Down to its final three outs, Concord started to rally with two three-run homers to make it a 12-9 game. Fortunately,
Andrew Coursin came in and shut down the comeback for the three-run win.
Tyler Wilkinson picked up the win as he went six full innings while Coursin earned the save. Riley and Goff each finished with three hits while Reep was 2-4 with four RBIs and scored another run.
Game 2: Concord 11, Fairmont State 0
In the second game, both teams struggled to get anything going offensively until the bottom of the third when the hosts scored three runs on three hits. After the Falcons went down in order, Concord added two more runs in the fourth to lead 5-0.
The Mountain Lions put the final touches on the game with six more runs on four hits in the fifth to now lead 11-0. The offensive woes continued for Fairmont State as it only totaled two hits over the final two innings and dropped the second game of the doubleheader.
Fairmont State (9-7) returns home to face Shepherd University on Tuesday, March 18 from Mylan Park. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
