BECKLEY, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University softball team made the trip south to face WVU Tech in a doubleheader. The Falcons were able to sweep the Golden Bears, 10-2 and 12-3.
Game 1: Fairmont State 10, WVU Tech 2 (6 Inn.)
After a scoreless first, Fairmont State scored the games first runs in the second inning as
Grace Sobeck doubled to centerfield to bring home
Alexa Andrews.
Abbie Keilholz kept the momentum going with a double of her to drive in Sobeck. Following a single by
Bella Hess,
Breonna Marietta lifted a ball to right field to allow Keilholz to cross homeplate. The final run of the inning was scored when
Emma Paul hit a sacrifice fly to right to give the Falcons a 4-0 lead.Â
The score stayed this way until the top of the fourth when Paul drove in another run, this time with a single as Hess easily scored.
Brinna Hall added to lead when she capitalized on an error by the hosts. Later in the frame,
Alyssa McCormick reached on a single as Paul scored to make it a seven-run difference (7-0).
WVU Tech got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when two runs scored on a single to left field. However, in the top of the sixth,
Alexa Foresha launched a ball over the left field wall for a three-run homer and make it a 10-2 score.
Phoebe Rusnak got the Golden Bears to go down in order to close out the game in six innings.
Allyson Nordling picked up the win as she went 4.2 innings allowing just two runs. Hess went 2-3 from the plate and scored twice while Paul was 1-2 with two RBI and scored another run.
Game 2: Fairmont State 12, WVU Tech 3 (5 Inn.)
The Falcons got the scoring started in the first when Paul hit a single to right field to score Hess.
Elizabeth Waszkiewicz followed with a double as Paul easily scored before McCormick reached on an error that to plate Waszkiewicz for a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, the hosts cut the deficit to two with an RBI double to right field. WVU Tech tied the game in the second as two runs were able to score on a single but the tied score didn't last long as Sobeck gave FSU the lead back in the third with single as two runs came home. Sobeck later scored on a ground ball off the bat of Keilholz as the Falcons led 6-3.
Fairmont State added to its lead in the fourth as Paul scored on an error.
Jaylin McGill then laid down a bunt that allowed Waszkiewicz to score and make it an 8-3 game. In the fifth, the Falcons looked to close out the game as McGill doubled to left field to score Hess and Paul.
Kae Compton followed with a triple to right field as
Amber Thompson, who pinch ran for McGill, came home.
Alexa Andrews drove in the games final run with single to hand FSU a nine-run advantage (12-3).
The Golden Bears tried to cut into the lead and extend the game but after a leadoff single were unable to muster another hit as the game ended by the final score of 12-3 in five innings.
Delaney Haller pitched 3.2 innings in relief, allowing three base runners while striking out five. Paul was a perfect 3-3 from the box with an RBI and scoring three times.
Fairmont State (8-6) is set to host California University of Pennsylvania on Friday, March 14 at Duvall-Rosier Field. Game one of the doubleheader is set for 2:00 p.m.
