PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Fairmont State University softball team kicked off a four-game road stretch against Chestnut Hill College. The Falcons took game one, 13-9 before tying in game two due to darkness, 5-5.
Game 1: Fairmont State 13, Chestnut Hill 9
In the first inning, Chestnut Hill got on the board first with an RBI single before a single to center field brought in two more runs. The hosts added another run in the second inning to lead 4-0.Â
Fairmont State cut the deficit in half in the third when
Breonna Marietta homered to right field as
Gabi Ramm was on base to make it a 4-2 game. The Falcons tied the game in the top of the fourth when
Alyssa McCormick singled to right field to bring home
Elizabeth Waszkiewicz and
Brinna Hall scored.
Still in the fourth, McCormick was able to score as
Alexa Andrews drew a throw on a stolen base.
Abbie Keilholz plated Andrews with an infield single. With the bases loaded,
Emma Paul reached on a fielder's choice as Keilholz scored with the Falcons now ahead by three (7-4).
The Griffins battled back in the fifth as it scored five runs on three hits including two run producing doubles. The hosts were back in front, 9-7, until the next half inning. As the bases were loaded, Waszkiewicz was hit by a pitch to score Keilholz.
Alexa Foresha stepped into the box and singled to left field to bring home two more runs to give FSU the lead back, 10-9.
In the top of the seventh, Fairmont State added three more runs on a couple of hits and errors to pick up the four-run victory.
Delaney Haller picked up the win as she pitched 2.2 innings in relief. She only allowed two runs (unearned) on six hits. Waszkiewicz and Keilholz were a perfect 3-3 from the plate.Â
Game 2: Fairmont State 5, Chestnut Hill 5 (8 Inn.)
The Falcons took the early lead in game two when Marietta doubled to left field to bring home
Bella Hess. Paul followed with a single to center field to score Marietta for the 2-0 lead.
Chestnut Hill got on the board in the bottom of the second with a walk as the bases were loaded to make it a 2-1 game. The next half inning, Marietta score another run with a solo homer to left for the two-run advantage (3-1) once again.
In the bottom half of the third, the Griffins scored on single before a fielder's choice brought home another run to tie the game at three.Â
Over the next four innings, neither team was able to score as the game ventured to extra innings. As daylight was fading, Fairmont State took the lead when Foresha singled down the left field line to score Paul and Hess.Â
However, in the bottom half of the inning, the Griffins tied the game was two runs were able to score on an error. As the game was headed to the ninth, it was ultimately called due to darkness.
Fairmont State (14-7-1) will head to Shippensburg University to face the Raiders on Wednesday, March 19. The first game is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
