SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- The Fairmont State University softball team continued its road trip against the Shippensburg University Raiders. The Falcons fell in the first game, 10-0 before bouncing back for a 6-1 win over the Raiders.
Game 1: Shippensburg 10, Fairmont State 0 (5 Inn.)
The top of the first inning, Fairmont State had a chance to get on the board first with runners on first and second but were unable to produce a run. Shippensburg took the lead in the bottom half as it scored on a ground ball out. The hosts were not done as they then produced two RBI hits to lead 3-0.
In the second inning, the Raiders went back to work offensively. Shippensburg added seven runs on five hits and an error to take a 10-0 lead.
The other chance the Falcons had to get on the board was in the top of the fourth. It was similar to the first inning with runners on first and second but they could not drive in a run. The hosts were able to cruise to the 10-0 win.
Game 2: Fairmont State 6, Shippensburg 1
Fairmont State wasted little time scoring in the second game when
Emma Paul singled to right center as
Bella Hess scored. A ground ball from the bat of
Elizabeth Waszkiewicz brought home
Kensy Thomas. The final run of the inning scored as
Alexa Andrews singled to left for a 3-0 lead.
As the game progressed to the third inning, the Falcons added to their lead thanks to an RBI single from
Alexa Foresha to drive in Paul.
FSU maintained the shutout until the bottom of the fourth when Shippensburg hit a solo home run to left. However, the Falcons got the run back in the fifth as Hess scored on a Waszkiewicz single to right.
After scoreless sixth, Fairmont State put one more run on the board as Hess was able tag from third on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Paul. In the bottom of the seventh, the Raiders were able to get a two-out double but
Delaney Haller popped up the final batter to earn the road win.
In the win, Hess went 3-4 with three runs while three other Falcons collected two hits. Haller threw a complete game as she allowed the lone run on six hits and three strikeouts to improve to 8-0 on the season.
Fairmont State (15-8-1) returns to Duvall-Rosier Field on Saturday, March 22 to face Point Park University. The first of the twinbill is set for 12:00 p.m.
