Fairmont State Endures Rain For Home Split

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University softball team welcomed the newest member of the Mountain East Conference, Point Park University to campus. The Falcons fell in the first game, 6-5, before enduring two rain delays to win game two, 8-5.

Game 1: Point Park 6, Fairmont State 5

Fairmont State got the early lead in the first inning as Emma Paul lifted a ball to deep center that allowed Bella Hess to tag and move to third. On the play, an errant throw from the outfield gave Hess the opportunity to score and give FSU the 1-0 lead.

In the third inning, Point Park got on the board in a big way with a three-run homer to left to swiftly take the lead. After the a single, the Pioneers doubled to right to give them a 4-1 advantage.

The visitors added another run in the fourth thanks to a double to left center to lead 5-1. Neither team scored in the fifth but Point Park scored once more in the sixth to lead by five (6-1).

As the game moved to the bottom of the seventh, the Falcons looked to rally and at least tie the game. With one out, Breonna Marietta hit a hard ground ball towards first that ricocheted off the players foot as Grace Sobeck scored. As the play continued to develop, a throwing error allowed two more runs to score as FSU only trailed by two, 6-4.

After a fly ball, Elizabeth Waszkiewicz tripled to right center to bring home Gabi Ramm to make it a one-run contest. Unfortunately, the Falcons were not able to drive in tying run and fell by the 6-5 final.

Game 2: Fairmont State 8, Point Park 5

Both starting pitchers had strong first innings but the Pioneers grabbed the early lead in the second when two runs scored on a double to left. In the middle of the top of the third, a small rain cell moved in causing a 15 minute delay. When play resumed, the visitors scored two more runs on a triple to right field to lead 4-0.

Fairmont State scored its first run as Paul hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Abbie Keilholz. Point Park scored once more in the fourth but the Falcons answered when Alexa Foresha tagged up on an Alyssa McCormick sacrifice fly.

After a 1-2-3 top of the fifth inning, more rain moved in that caused a 30 minute wait. Out of the delay, the Falcons quickly went to work as two runs scored off a Paul single up the middle. Two at-bats later, Foresha hit a fly ball to right as Paul was able to score and tie the game at five.

Following a McCormick single down the right field line, Alexa Andrews drove a ball to straight-away center for a two-run homer and the 7-5 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, McCormick was able to produce one more run as Waszkiewicz scored on an infield single. The Pioneers tried to amount a comeback but Delaney Haller shut the door to secure the win.
