FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Farimont State University softball team hosted Salem University in a non-conference matchup. The Falcons fell in game one, 1-0, before bouncing back to a 5-4 win in the second game.
Game 1: Salem 1, Fairmont State 0
Salem scored in the first inning with an RBI single to right field. From that point forward, both pitchers were in a groove as neither team was able to get anything going.
The best chance for Fairmont State came in the seventh inning with runners on the corners and no outs. An unfortunate double play followed by a strikeout ended the game as the hosts fell by 1-0 score.
Despite the loss,
Caitlin Morey had a strong performance in the circle. She allowed the lone run on six hits while striking out seven.
Game 2: Fairmont State 5, Salem 4
In the second game, the Tigers scored two runs on a double down the left field line in the opening frame. The Falcons had a big response in the bottom half with the first run scoring on an
Emma Paul sacrifice fly.
Alexa Foresha then doubled as
Elizabeth Waszkiewicz scored.
Delaney Haller helped her own cause with a double to plate Foresha. Haller then scored the final run on an
Alexa Andrews single to give FSU a 4-2 lead.
Fairmont State maintained the two-run advantage until the top of the fourth when Salem scored runs on a double and a fielder's choice to even the game at four. The two were tied at four through most of the fifth before
Alexa Andrews hit a sacrifice fly to right to bring home Waszkiewicz.Â
With the one-run lead, Haller allowed just one base runner over the final two innings to pick up the home win.
Haller (10-0) gave up four runs (all earned) on six hits with just as many strikeouts. Haller and Foresha were the lone Falcons with multiple hits while Andrews drove in two runs.
Fairmont State (17-10-1) starts a 12-game road stretch on Wednesday, March 26 at Frostburg State University. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
