FROSTBURG, Md. -- The Fairmont State University softball team kicked off its 12-game road stretch against Frostburg State University. The Falcons were able to take both games from the Bobcats, 8-1 and 7-4.
Game 1: Fairmont State 8, Frostburg State 1
Fairmont State to the opening lead in the first as
Alexa Foresha singled to center field to drive in
Bella Hess and
Emma Paul. Frostburg State had an answer in the bottom half with an RBI single to left field.
The score remained 2-1 until the top of the sixth when
Alexa Andrews doubled to straight-away center as
Elizabeth Waszkiewicz scored. In the seventh innings, the Falcons expanded their lead starting with a solo shot off the bat of
Abbie Keilholz.
Later in the in the inning, Waszkiewicz hit a two-run homer to left to make it a 6-1 game.
Kamilla Slayton drove in the final two runs with a single to center as
Carly Crowder and
Alexa Andrews scored.Â
The Bobcats were able to get two runners in scoring position with two outs but
Caitlin Morey got the last batter to strikeout for the seven-run victory.
Morey pitched a complete game, allowing just one run (earned) on five hits while striking out nine.Â
Game 2: Fairmont State 7, Frostburg State 4
In the second game, Fairmont State had a great chance in the opening frame with bases loaded and no outs. Unfortunately, the team was unable to produce a run. From there both starting pitchers settled in over the next three innings.
The Falcons to on board first when
Alyssa McCormick laid down a sacrifice to score Andrews. Later on,
Delaney Haller was able to score thanks to a passed ball before Paul singled to plate
Breonna Marietta and
Mattea Buchta.
However, the 4-0 lead did not last long as Frostburg State hit a grand slam over the left field fence to tie it up. Fortunately, the visitors were able to recapture the lead in the fifth as Crowder scored on a wild pitch.
Bella Hess followed it with a single to left as Haller easily scored.
The Bobcats thought they had a chance in the bottom half with the bases loaded and one out. Haller was able to shut the door and preserve the 6-4 lead.
McCormick delivered the final run scoring hit of the game as Andrews scored on the double down the left field line. Over the final two innings, Haller limited the hosts to just one base runner while striking out three to pick up the road win.
Haller finished the game with four runs on five hits while striking out six. The Falcons' seven hits game off seven different bats in the lineup.
Fairmont State (19-10-1, 6-2) faces Wheeling University on Saturday, March 29 from the I-470 Complex. Game one is set for 12:00 p.m.
