Falcons Continue Strong Play in MEC

WHEELING, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University softball team squared off against Wheeling University in a conference doubleheader. The Falcons were victorious in both games, 4-3 and 8-1. 
 
Game 1: Fairmont State 4, Wheeling 3 
 
Neither team was really able to get some offensive going until the top of the fourth. Alyssa McCormick score the first run of the day for Fairmont State as she scored on an error by the third baseman. 
 
Wheeling tied the game in the bottom half with an RBI single. The Cardinals then took the lead in the fifth as two runs scored on a line drive to left field. 
 
The Falcons cut into the lead in the seventh when Emma Paul hit a sacrifice fly to left as Bella Hess was able to score. Down to the final out, Alexa Foresha delivered a double to center to plate Brinna Hall and tie the game at three. Alexa Andrews kept the momentum going with a single as Foresha scored to take a 4-3 lead. 
 
In the bottom of the seventh, Wheeling had a runner in scoring position as Delaney Haller took over the pitching duty. Haller forced a ground ball to close out the game. 
 
Caitlin Morey earned the win as she went 6.2 innings with three runs (earned) on 10 hits and five strikeouts. Haller faced the one batter as she picked up her second save of the season. 
 
Game 2: Fairmont State 8, Wheeling 1 
 
Wheeling was the first team to score in game two with an RBI single up the middle in the first. Fairmont State responded with two runs in the second including an RBI ground ball from Delaney Haller
 
The Falcons added to their lead in the third as Kensy Thomas scored on an error. Paul then lifted a ball to center that allowed Hess to tag-up and score. Elizabeth Waszkiewicz drove in the final run of the frame with a grounder to hold a 5-1 lead. 
 
As the game progressed into the later half, Fairmont State looked to expand its lead in the sixth. McCormick got the inning started with an RBI single to center field. Haller scored the next run on a sacrifice fly by Abbie Keilholz. Hess was able to then plate McCormick with single through the left side. 
 
Olivia Hylton came into to pitch the final two innings and was able to shutout the hosts for the road sweep. 
 
Haller tossed five innings of one-run ball with five strikeouts. Hess went 2-4 for the second game as she drove in a run and scored another. 
 
Fairmont State (21-10-1, 8-2) is set for a road twin bill against West Liberty University on Sunday, March 30. Game one is set for 2:00 p.m.
