Late Game Heroics Leads to Sweep for FSU

ELKINS, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University baseball team faced the Davis & Elkins Senators in cross-division matchup. The Falcons were able to score late in both games for the sweep, 8-7 and 7-5.

Game 1: Fairmont State 8, Davis & Elkins 7

Noah Canterbury gave Fairmont State the lead in the opening frame with a single to centerfield as Quintin Smith scored. Davis & Elkins tied the game on an RBI single of its own in the bottom half.

The Falcons regained the lead in the third when Smith scored once again, this time via a single from Quintin Reep. Ryan Goff then hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Zach Brennan to hold a 3-1 edge. Unfortunately, the lead did not last long as the Senators tied it in the bottom part of the third when two runs scored on a single to right field.

However, FSU had quickly captured the lead back as Maddox Johnston scored on a ground ball off the bat of Cameron Moore. D&E took its first lead in the bottom of the fourth as two runs scored on an infield single. The hosts added two more runs in the inning to lead 7-4.

Fairmont State trailed by the three-run deficit until the sixth when Brennan drew a walk with the bases loaded before Reep plated a run with a ground ball. Going to the final inning, Davis & Elkins still held a one-run advantage, 7-6.

In the seventh, the Falcons were able to tie the game when Tyler Haskins doubled to center field as Gunner Riley scored. Later in the inning, Haskins was able to cross home when Canterbury singled to right field to go in front, 8-7. After a leadoff single by the Senators, Mac Schnur got the next three batters out for the win.

Schnur pitched 3.2 innings in relief as he only allowed two hits and struck out three for the win. Canterbury went 3-4 from the plate as he drove in two runs.

Game 2: Fairmont State 7, Davis & Elkins 5 (8 Inn.)

In the second game, it was the hosts that took the early, first inning lead with an RBI single to right. FSU tied the game in the second when Riley scored on a ground ball off the bat of Tyler Wilkinson.

D&E reclaimed the lead in the second with another RBI single to hold a 2-1 advantage. The score remained this way until the top of the sixth when Wilkinson drove in Goff with a single to left.

After a scoreless seventh, the game ventured to extra innings as the Falcons looked to strike first as Goff brought home Brennan with a base hit to center field. After stealing second, Goff scored on a Wilkinson single through the right side.

The inning continued when Haskins singled to right as Wilkinson was able to score. Two more runs came across for the Falcons when Moore reached on an error by the left fielder. Going to the bottom of the eighth, Fairmont State led 7-2.

Davis & Elkins started to make a comeback as a run scored on a single before two more runs scored thanks to a double to center field. However, that was the end of the rally as FSU won the game by two (7-5).

Wilkinson finished the game 2-4 with three runs batted in and scoring another. Goff collected two hits in his three at-bats as he scored twice and drove a run in.

Fairmont State (13-11, 7-3) remains on the road on Sunday, March 30 to face West Virginia Wesleyan College. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m.
