Fairmont State Defeats West Virginia Wesleyan Before Rain Hits

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University baseball team visited West Virginia Wesleyan College for an MEC doubleheader. The Falcons won the first game, 4-2 before rain caused the second game to be postponed.

The early frames of the game were fairly quiet with both teams stranding runners. In the top of the third, Fairmont State broke the scoreless tie when Maddox Johnston scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Connor Bailey. Tyler Haskins then stepped into the box and delivered a two-run homer to push the Falcons in front, 3-0.

West Virginia Wesleyan made it a 3-1 game in the bottom half with a sacrifice fly to left field. FSU got the run back in the fourth when Quintin Reep hit a leadoff homer.

Once again with a three-run lead, Tyler Wilkinson allowed just two base runners over the next two innings. In the bottom of the seventh, the Bobcats scored another run via a passed ball. The hosts had runners in scoring position but Wilkinson got the final batter to strikeout to pick up the win.

Wilkinson pitched the complete game, allowing just two runs (one earned) with eight hits while striking out six.

Late in the first game, rain started to move into the area and caused a delay before the ultimate postponement of game two. The two teams will conclude the series on Tuesday, April 1 from Mylan Park in Morgantown, West Virginia. Game two of the Falcons and Bobcats will start at 4:00 p.m.

With the moving of the second game, Fairmont State's game against Seton Hill has been postponed and a rescheduled date is yet to be determined.
