DUBOIS, Pa. -- The Fairmont State University baseball team ventured north for a mid-week matchup with Clarion University. The Falcons were able to out-score the Golden Eagles, 15-13.
Fairmont State jumped on the board first in the opening inning when
Cameron Moore scored on a
Quintin Smith double to left field. After advancing to third, Smith scored on a ground ball off the bat of
Zach Brennan to give the team a 2-0 lead.Â
Clarion cut into the lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the second. The hosts then took the lead in the third with a double that scored two runs before a two-run homer gave them a 5-2 edge. The Golden Eagles tacked on one more run with another homer in the fourth.
In the fifth, the Falcons showed life and quickly jumped back in front. The maroon and white scored nine runs on six hits to go ahead by five (11-6). In the inning,
Quintin Reep doubled to left center to score Smith and
Noah Canterbury.Â
The Golden Eagles chipped away at the deficit with an RBI ground ball in the fifth before scoring two more runs in the sixth to make it an 11-9 game. As the game moved to the seventh,
Tyler Haskins scored for the Falcons on a ground ball off the bat of Canterbury before Reep drove in two more runs to extend the lead back to five (14-9).
Clarion went down in order in the seventh but in the eighth, it found some more runs with a RBI single through the right side. Still in the eighth, the hosts scored two more runs on another single as the scoreboard read 14-12 in favor of FSU.
Reep delivered an RBI hit with the bases loaded to hand his team a three-run advantage (15-12) going to the bottom of the ninth. In the frame, the Golden Eagles were able to score once more before
Mac Schnur recorded a strikeout and a grounder to short to secure the road win for the Falcons.Â
Andrew Coursin picked up the win as he worked two innings in relief while Schnur earned his first save of the season. Reep finished the day with four hits and drove in five runs while scoring another. Moore, Smith and
Ryan Goff were the other Falcons to record multiple hits for the afternoon.
Fairmont State (3-4) kicks a four-game homestand with Kentucky Wesleyan on Friday, March 7 from Mylan Park in Morgantown. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
