FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University baseball team wrapped up its four-game stand with Kentucky Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon. A dominate pitching performance by
Tyler Wilkinson matched with hot bats led to a 12-0 win over the Panthers.
In the first inning, Kentucky Wesleyan threatened to score the first runs with the bases loaded but
Tyler Wilkinson forced a ground ball to end the threat. In the bottom half, Fairmont State scored the first run as
Connor Bailey scored on a throwing error by the catcher. The next at-bat,
Noah Canterbury doubled down the left field line to bring home
Quintin Smith. Later in the inning,
Ryan Goff hit a ball into left field to drive in Canterbury for the final run of the frame. Going to the second, the Falcons led 3-0.
The Panthers looked to score once again in the top of the second with runners on first and second and no outs. However, Wilkinson kept his cool on the mound and forced three-straight outs to keep the shutout going. In the bottom half, Canterbury drove in another run with a sacrifice fly.
After Kentucky Wesleyan went down in order, the Falcons went back to work with the bats.
Maddox Johnston got in on the action with an RBI ground ball as Goff scored. Following a
Tyler Haskins walk, Bailey lifted a ball into centerfield to bring home
Gage Bibey to make it a 6-0 game.
Another 1-2-3 top half by the visitors, Fairmont State put the final stamp on the game in the bottom of the fourth. The hosts added five more runs on five hits including a Smith single through the left side as Haskins and Johnston came home to score.
The final touch for the Falcons came in the fifth inning when
Gunner Riley drove a ball down the right field line as
Quintin Reep scored the games final run. Over the final two innings, Wilkinson sat down the Panthers in order for the complete game shutout.
