NUTTER FORT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University baseball team kicked a four-game series against Salem University. The Falcons dropped both games to the Tigers, 4-3 and 10-9.
Game 1: Salem 4, Fairmont State 3 (8 Inn.)
In the first couple of innings, both teams had chances but were unable to capitalize. Salem, however, broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third with an RBI triple to right field. Later in the inning, the hosts added two more runs on a double to left field.
Fairmont State was able to score in the top of the fourth when
Ryan Goff doubled to drive in
Quintin Reep.Â
The score remained 3-1 in favor of the Tigers until the top of the seventh.
Connor Bailey singled to left field as
Gunner Riley scored.
Tyler Haskins followed with his own RBI single as the game was tied at three.Â
As the game ventured the extra innings, the Falcons were unable to produce a run in the eighth. In the bottom half, Salem walked off with the win thanks to an RBI single to right center.
Game 2: Salem 10, Fairmont State 9
Fairmont State claimed the early lead in the second game as
Zach Brennan singled to left field to plate
Cameron Moore. With runners on second and third after a passed ball, Goff singled to left field to clear the bases and hand FSU the 3-0 lead.
The Falcons maintained the three-run advantage until the bottom of the fifth when Salem scored on an RBI single. The Tigers continued to produce RBI hits as they tied the game at three.Â
In the bottom of the sixth, the hosts took a commanding, 10-3 lead. Salem scored seven runs on six hits as the game went to the final inning.
Down to its final out, Fairmont State showed life when Reep singled to center field to score
Tyler Haskins. As the bases were then loaded, Tyler WIlkinson cleared them with a double to left. Riley kept the momentum going with a two-run homer to make it a one-run contest, 10-9. Unfortunately, the rally comeback ended there as the Falcons by the one-score difference.
Fairmont State (17-15) continues its series against Salem University on Sunday, April 13. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
