FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University softball team hosted Glenville State University on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons dropped the first game, 9-1 but bounced back with an 8-4 victory in game two.
Game 1: Glenville State 9, Fairmont State 1
Neither team was able to get a run across in the first inning despite Fairmont State having runners in scoring position. In the top of the second, Glenville State took the lead with an RBI single to center field. The Pioneers added two more runs on a double before another run-scoring single made it a 4-0 game.
The Falcons got on the board in the bottom of the second when
Alexa Andrews scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Abbie Keilholz.
Unfortunately, Glenville State quickly answered in the top of the inning with a solo home run to left center. Followed with an RBI single to left center, the visitors now led 6-1.
The visitors added another run in the sixth and two more in the seventh as Fairmont State struggled to get anything going offensive and dropped the first game of the doubleheader.
Game 2: Fairmont State 8, Glenville State 4
Similar to the first game, Glenville State scored the first run on a passed ball. However, the Falcons tied the game when
Bella Hess scored on an error. Later in the inning,
Alexa Foresha doubled down the right field line to plate
Emma Paul for the 2-1 advantage.
In the top of the second,
Delaney Haller struck out two batters looking and eclipsed the 200-strikeout mark in her career. Fairmont State continued its momentum in the bottom half of the inning when
Sydney Emanuel scored as
Kamilla Slayton drew a walk with the bases loaded.
Paul then drove in a
Mattea Buchta followed by a sacrifice fly by
Elizabeth Waszkiewicz. As Hess scored, the Falcons now led 5-1.
The Pioneers tacked on another run with a solo home run to left field but the hosts remained out front. In the bottom of the fourth, Hess scored once more, this time via a passed ball.
Alexa Foresha led off the bottom of the fifth with a home run to left center. Later in the frame,
Abbie Keilholz singled down to left field line as
Gabi Ramm scored to make it an 8-2 contest.
In the seventh inning, the visitors scored two more runs but were unable to complete the comeback as the Falcons picked up the four-run victory.
With the win,
Brooke Lowery reached 100 wins as a head coach. As all of them were recorded at Fairmont State, she is the fourth coach in program history to reach 100 wins.
Fairmont State (27-12-1, 12-4) hosts Concord University for Senior Day on Sunday, April 13. Game one is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
