FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University softball team hosted a doubleheader against Concord University. The Falcons fell in the first game, 9-3, before walking off game two, 4-3.
Prior to the games, the team honored its five seniors:
Alexa Andrews,
Kae Compton, Jodan Popowski,
Grace Sobeck and
Elizabeth Waszkiewicz.
Game 1: Concord 9, Fairmont State 3
Neither team was able to get a run across in the first inning but in the second, Concord took control of the game with six runs on three hits including a grand slam. Fairmont State was able to score in the bottom half when
Elizabeth Waszkiewicz scored on a single off the bat of
Kamilla Slayton.
The Mountain Lions were able to add run in the third, fifth and sixth innings to open a 9-1 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, the Falcons added a run on a wild pitch before
Alexa Foresha singled through the left side to plate
Grace Sobeck.
Unfortunately, the hosts were unable to score additional runs and fell by the six-run margin.
Game 2: Fairmont State 4, Concord 3
The second game was a pitching duel as both teams were held without a run over the first four innings. In the top of the fifth, the visitors took the lead as two runs scored on a double down the left field line.Â
In the bottom half, Fairmont State tied the game when two runs scored on a
Abbie Keilholz double to right center. Later in the inning,
Breonna Marietta singled to left center as
Mattea Buchta scored for the 3-2 lead.
Concord tied the game in the top of the sixth as a run scored on an error. The Falcons had a chance to take the lead back in the bottom half but were unable to do so.
After holding the Mountian Lions scoreless in the top of the seventh, the hosts looked to walk it off in the bottom half. As runners were on first and second with two outs,
Emma Paul singled up the middle to bring home
Abbie Keilholz for the walk off win.
Delaney Haller earned her 16th win as she pitched a complete game, allowing just three runs (two earned) on five hits with six strikeouts. Keilholz went 1-2 from the plate with two RBI and scoring the game-winning run.
Fairmont State (28-13-1, 13-5) hits the road on Wednesday, April 16 to face Point Park University. Start time from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is set for 3:00 p.m.
