PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Fairmont State University softball team hit the road to face Point Park University. The Falcons won both games, 5-1 and 10-1.
Game 1: Fairmont State 5, Point Park 1
In the first game, both teams had several chances to score in first couple of innings but were not able to convert. In the top of the fifth, Fairmont State scored the game's first run when
Alexa Foresha singled to left field to bring home
Brinna Hall. The next at-bat,
Kamilla Slayton singled to center to drive in two more runs for the 3-0 lead.
The Falcons added to their lead in the sixth when
Abbie Keilholz scored as Hall reached on an error.
Emma Paul then laid down a sacrifice bunt to plate
Bella Hess to make it a 5-0 game.
Point Park was able to get on the board in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double but that was the lone run the hosts produced.
Caitlin Morey pitched a complete game, allowing just one run (unearned) on five hits with two strikeouts.
Game 2: Fairmont State 10, Point Park 1
The Pioneers captured the early lead in the second game with a double to left field. The hosts remained in front until the top of the fourth when Foresha hit a ball over the center field wall for a two-run homer to capture a 2-1 edge.Â
In the fifth, Fairmont State added to its lead as Hess scored on a Hall single to center. Paul then hit a single to center of her own as
Alexa Andrews scored. After stealing third, Paul scored on an infield single by
Elizabeth Waszkiewicz to make it a 5-1 game.Â
The Falcons kept the momentum going in the sixth as
Grace Sobeck scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Alyssa McCormick. In the seventh, the visitors put a final stamp on the game as they scored four runs on four hits to go ahead 10-1.Â
Point Park threatened in the bottom half with the bases loaded but a pop-up and a double play ended the game.
Delaney Haller earned the win as she threw 5.1 innings, giving up one run (earned) on four hits while striking out seven. Paul went a perfect 3-3 from the plate as she drove in a run and scored three times.
Fairmont State (30-13-1, 15-5) will host Wheeling University on Thursday, April 17 for Military Appreciation. Game one is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
