Falcons Picks Up Series Sweep of Wheeling

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University softball team hosted Wheeling University in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader. The Falcons claimed both games, 7-6 and 1-0.

Game 1: Fairmont State 7, Wheeling 6

Wheeling captured the first lead in the opening frame with an RBI single through the left side. In the bottom half, Fairmont State tied the game when Brinna Hall stole second to allow Bella Hess to score. Later in the inning, Hall scored on a wild pitch to take a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Alexa Andrews hit a lead-off homer to center field to make it a 3-1 game. Unfortunately, in the top of the third, the Cardinals recaptured the lead with a three-run homer. The visitors were able to score two more runs in the fourth to open a 6-3 advantage. 

The Falcons started to battle back in the sixth when Alexa Foresha singled through the left side to plate Elizabeth Waszkiewicz. Later in the inning, Alyssa McCormick laid down a sacrifice bunt that allowed Grace Sobeck to score to make it a one-run game, 6-5.

After a 1-2-3 inning by Wheeling, Fairmont State looked to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. Emma Paul delivered the tying run with an RBI single down the left field line. With one out and runners in scoring position, Foresha ripped a ball through the left side as Kensy Thomas scored the walk-off run.

Allyson Nordling picked up the win as she threw 3.1 innings in relief, allowing no hits and runs while striking out two. Hall went 3-4 from the plate as Foresha collected two hits while driving in two runs.

Game 2: Fairmont State 1, Wheeling 0

In the second game, it was the Falcons who got the early lead in the first as Alexa Andrews scored on a Paul single down the left field line. 

From there, Delaney Haller went to work in the pitcher's circle as she only allowed five base runners over the final six innings. Fairmont State claimed the 1-0 victory and the series sweep.

Haller improved to 18-0 on the season with the complete game shutout. She gave up just two hits while striking out two.

Fairmont State (32-13-1, 17-5) will host its final regular season doubleheader at home on Friday, April 18 against West Liberty University. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
