Fairmont State Hosts West Liberty

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University softball team hosted West Liberty University in the final regular season home doubleheader. The Falcons fell in both games, 6-4 and 12-0.

Game 1: West Liberty 6, Fairmont State 4 (9 Inn.)

Over the first two innings, neither team was able to score a run until the top of the third. In the top of the third, West Liberty took the lead with a three-run homer to left field.

The visitors remained ahead by three runs until the bottom of the fourth, when Alexa Foresha singled up the middle to drive in Emma Paul and Elizabeth Waszkiewicz to make it a one-run score (3-2).

Unfortunately, in the fifth, the Hilltoppers expanded their lead with an RBI double to right center. In the bottom half, Carly Crowder scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Breonna Marietta. Then Waszkiewicz reached on an infield single before a throwing error allowed Bella Hess to even the score at four.

Both teams had chances to take the lead over the next two frames but neither team was successful as the game went to extra innings. In the top of the ninth, West Liberty took the lead with a two-run homer over the left center wall. Fairmont State was able to get runners on in the bottom half but were unable to get a run across as it fell by the two-run deficit.

Game 2: West Liberty 12, Fairmont State 0 (5 Inn.)

West Liberty complete control of the second game by scoring five runs in the first inning.

The visitors added seven more runs in the third inning to eventually claim the win.

Fairmont State (32-15-1, 17-7) will venture south to face West Virginia State University on Friday, April 25. Start time is set for 1:00 p.m.
