SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University softball team headed south to face West Virginia State University. After battling through multiple rain delays, the Falcons swept the Yellow Jackets, 5-2 and 8-0.
Game 1: Fairmont State 5, West Virginia State 2
West Virginia State scored the games first run in the bottom of the first with an RBI single up the middle. Fairmont State tied the game in the third when
Kae Compton scored on an infield single by
Brinna Hall.
In the fourth, the Falcons took the lead as
Jordan Popowski scored on a single down the left field line by
Alexa Andrews. Andrews later scored on a throwing error to make it a 3-1 game.
Fairmont State added to its lead in the fifth as
Emma Paul drove in
Gabi Ramm with a triple to center field. Paul then scored as
Elizabeth Waszkiewicz laid down a sacrifice bunt.
The Yellow Jackets were able to score once more in the bottom part of the fifth with an RBI single to left field. From that point forward, the Falcons shut down the hosts for the win.
Caitlin Morey was credited with the win as she pitched 4.2 innings, allowing two runs (earned) on four hits with three strikeouts.
Micah Wilson earned her second save with 2.1 scoreless innings of one-hit ball.
Game 2: Fairmont State 8, West Virginia State 0 (6 Inn.)
Fairmont State captured the early lead in the second game as
Bella Hess scored on a throwing error. Hall then scored on a wild pitch before Andrews hit an infield single to plate Paul.
Leading 3-0, the Falcons added to their advantage in the fourth when Hess was able to bring home Andrews on a single to left field. Compton then scored on a double steal.
Alexa Foresha added to the total with a solo home run in the fifth before the visitors scored two more runs in the sixth to seal the 8-0 win.
Delaney Haller (19-1) picked up the win going 4.1 innings allowing one hit and walk.
Bella Hess finished the game 3-4 from the plate with two RBI and scoring once.
Fairmont State (34-15-1, 19-7) wraps up the regular season on Sunday, April 27 at the University of Charleston. Game one is set for 12:00 p.m.
