Falcons Travel to Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University softball team faced the University of Charleston in the final doubleheader of the season. The Falcons fell to the Golden Eagles, 8-2 and 5-1.

Game 1: Charleston 8, Fairmont State 2

Fairmont State took the early lead in the first inning when Emma Paul laid down a bunt to bring home Bella Hess. Charleston took the lead in the bottom of the second with as two runs scored on a double down the left field line.

The Falcons quickly tied the score in the third when Paul singled through the left side as Hess scored once more. In the bottom half, the Golden Eagles recaptured the lead with an RBI single before a sacrifice fly to right gave them the 4-2 lead.

Charleston added to its lead in the fifth with a solo home run before added three runs on five hits in the sixth to lead 8-2. Down to its final three outs, Fairmont State was unable to get a runner on base as it fell by the six-run difference.

Game 2: Charleston 5, Fairmont State 1

In the second game, its was the hosts to hold the early advantage as two runs scored on a single to left field in the second inning. The Falcons cut into the lead in the third when Amber Thompson scored on a Paul single to right center.

The Golden Eagles expanded their lead back to two (3-1) with a sacrifice fly to right in the fourth inning. In the sixth inning, Charleston added runs on a double to left field and a fielder's choice to achieve the final score of 5-1.

Fairmont State (34-17-1, 19-9) captured its third-straight Mountain East Conference North Division Title and will face Concord University to open the MEC Tournament on Wednesday, April 30. Start time from Salem, Virginia is set for 5:00 p.m.
