SALEM, Va. -- The Fairmont State University softball team battled Concord University to open the Mountain East Conference Tournament. The Falcons took down the Mountain Lions, 7-2.
Concord got the scoring started in the first inning as a run scored on a singled to center field. In the bottom half, Fairmont State tied the game when
Brinna Hall singled to bring home
Bella Hess. Later in the frame,
Alexa Foresha hit a fly ball to center field that allowed
Jordan Popowski to tag and score.
Still in the first,
Emma Paul scored on a throwing error by the catcher before
Grace Sobeck laid down a sacrifice bunt to plate
Elizabeth Waszkiewicz. Going to the second inning, the Falcons led 4-1. The Mountain Lions cut the difference to two (4-2) with a sacrifice fly to left field.
The score between the two teams remained 4-2 until the bottom of the sixth. In the inning,
Kae Compton singled down the right field line to bring home
Carly Crowder and Sobeck.
Alexa Andrews then scored when
Sydney Emanuel put down a sacrifice bunt to make it a five-run contest (7-2).
In the seventh, Concord was able to get runners in scoring position but a ground ball to second ended the game as the Falcons moved to the winner's bracket.
Delaney Haller (20-2) earned the win as she went six innings with two runs (earned) on five hits and five strikeouts.
Kae Compton finished the day with two hits as she drove in two runs.
Fairmont State (35-17-1) will face the two-seed out of the south, the University of Charleston. First pitch from Salem, Virginia is set for 12:00 p.m.
