SHEPHERD, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University baseball team hit the road to face Shepherd University in a non-conference matchup. The Falcons fell to the Rams, 10-7.
Fairmont State got the scoring started in the top of the first as
Quintin Reep singled to left field to bring home
Cameron Moore. Shepherd quickly tied the game in the bottom half when a run scored on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the second, the Rams claimed the lead as a run scored on a walk with the bases loaded. The Falcons responded in the third when Moore scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Zach Brennan. The next at-bat, Reep singled the right field as
Tyler Haskins crossed home. The final run of the inning scored when
Tyler Wilkinson singled to right for the 4-2 lead.
The visitors expanded their advantage in the fourth as
Kris Sutton scored on an RBI single from Moore. In the bottom part of the inning, the hosts scored two runs to make it a one-run game (5-4).
Shepherd reclaimed the lead in the fifth as three runs scored on two hits and errors to go ahead, 7-5. Fairmont State trailed by the two-run deficit until and RBI single by
Ryan Goff made it a one-run game. Goff later scored in the inning to even the score at seven.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth when the Rams took the lead thanks to an RBI double to right center. Another run scored on a wild pitch before a home run to left center made it a 10-7 score. The Falcons were unable to get any base runners on in the ninth as they fell by the three-run margin.
Fairmont State (19-20) returns to conference play on Saturday, April 26 against West Liberty University for Senior Day. Start time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
