FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University baseball team face West Liberty University on Senior Day. The Falcons won the first game, 7-2, before falling in game two, 12-4.
Game 1: Fairmont State 7, West Liberty 2
West Liberty claimed the early lead in the opening frame as two runs scored on a single to right center. Fairmont State responded in the bottom half as
Quintin Smith scored on a
Cameron Moore triple down the right field line. Moore then came home thanks to a ground ball off the bat of
Zach Brennan.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the third when Smith scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Brennan. The Falcons added to their lead in the fifth when Moore hit his second triple of the game as Smith and
Maddox Johnston scored.
Still in the fifth,
Ryan Goff brought home Moore with a double down the left field line before
Noah Canterbury singled through the right side to plate Brennan for the 7-2 lead.
In the seventh inning, West Liberty worked the bases loaded with two outs but
Micah Canterbury got the final batter to hit an infield pop-up to end the game.
Micah Canterbury pitched the full seven innings, giving up the two runs (unearned) on six hits. Moore finished 3-3 with two triples while driving in three runs and scoring twice.
Game 2: West Liberty 12, Fairmont State 4
In the second game, the Hilltoppers captured the first lead once again as a run scored on a throwing error. West Liberty added five runs on four hits in the second to go in front, 6-0.
The visitors tacked on four more runs in the third including a three-run homer to left center. Fairmont State got on the board in the bottom of the third when Smith doubled to center as Johnston scored.
West Liberty scored a run in the fifth and sixth innings to extend the lead to 11 (12-1). In the bottom part of the sixth, Goff hit a two-run homer over the left field wall to make it a 12-3 contest. The final run for the Falcons came in the seventh when Johnston hit a towering shot to left center as they fell by the 12-4 final.
Fairmont State (20-21, 13-8) wraps up its series against West Liberty on Sunday, April 27 from Mylan Park in Morgantown. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
