FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University baseball team wrapped its four-game series with West Liberty University. The Falcons dropped the first game, 10-3, before rallying in game two for the 6-5 victory.
Game 1: West Liberty 10, Fairmont State 3
West Liberty opened the first game with a lead-off home run to take a 1-0 lead. In the second, the Hilltoppers added to their advantage when a run scored on a wild pitch. In the bottom half of the frame,
Ryan Goff got Fairmont State on the board with a solo shot over the left field wall.
Unfortunately, the visitors hit extended their lead in the third with a bases clearing double to right center. With a 5-1 lead, West Liberty hit another solo home run to go ahead by five runs.
In the bottom of the fifth,
Maddox Johnston pulled the Falcons within three (6-3) thanks to a two-run homer to right center. The Hilltoppers responded with a three-run blast in the sixth to lead 9-3.
The visitors added one more run in the seventh on a double down the left field line. West Liberty captured the 10-3 victory to take a 2-1 series lead.
Game 2: Fairmont State 6, West Liberty 5
In the second game, the visitors once again took the early lead as a run scored on an error in the outfield in the second inning. West Liberty grew the lead to three with a two-run homer in the next inning.Â
The Hilltoppers continued to drive in runs with an RBI single and walk in the fourth to hold a 5-0 advantage. In the bottom part of the fourth, Fairmont State got on the board when
Ryan Goff scored on a wild pitch.
Goff then added to the Falcons' total in the fifth with a two-run shot over the left center wall to make its 5-3. Later in frame,
Tyler Haskins drew a walk with the bases loaded to plate
Kellen Kinsler to make it a one-run game.
In the sixth inning, Fairmont State drew two-consecutive walks before Goff delivered a game-tying double down the left field line.
Quintin Reep then gave FSU the lead with a bases loaded walk to push the team ahead, 6-5.
Down to their final three outs, the Hilltoppers were looking to extend the game. However, three-straight ground balls to Goff at shortstop ended the game for the 6-5 win for the hosts.
Fairmont State (21-22, 14-9) starts a four-game stint against Frostburg State University on Friday, May 2. Game one from Frostburg, Maryland is set for 1:00 p.m.
