Fairmont State Rallies For Road Win at Wheeling

WHEELING, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University baseball team traveled to complete its series against Wheeling University. The Falcons were able to rally to defeat the Cardinals, 7-6.

Fairmont State got the scoring started in the top of the first when Zach Brennan homered to left center while Cameron Moore was on base for the 2-0 lead. The Falcons held the advantage until the bottom of the second as Wheeling scored three runs on four hits to ahead by one (3-2).

The Falcons responded in the top of the third as Tyler Haskins scored on a Moore single to right field. The Cardinals answered in their half of the inning with an RBI triple before another run scored on an error to gain a 5-3 edge.

Back-and-forth the teams went as Quintin Smith singled to right field to plate Micah Canterbury and Maddox Johnston. Unfortunately, just like previous innings, the hosts recaptured the lead with a solo home run to left field.

Wheeling maintained the run-advantage until the top of the seventh when Ryan Goff doubled to left field to score Moore and tie the game at six. In the next at-bat, Gunner Riley lifted a ball to right field allowing Brennan to score on the sacrifice fly to claim a 7-6 lead.

Already thrown an inning in relief, Goff went back to the mound to record the final three outs. The reigning MEC Player of the Week did just that with three strikeouts for the road win.

Goff earned the win, tossing two scoreless innings with three strikeouts and facing the minimum. Brennan, Goff and Smith each finished with two hits as Brennan scored twice and drove in two runs.

Fairmont State (22-22, 15-9) starts its final series of the regular season against Frostburg State University on Friday, May 2. First pitch from Frostburg, Maryland is set for 1:00 p.m.
