FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University baseball team squared off against Point Park University. THe Falcons took game one, 5-2, before the Pioneers won game two, 13-6.
Game 1: Fairmont State 5, Point Park 2
After Point Park went down in order, Fairmont State scored the first run off a
Quintin Smith double to right center as
Connor Bailey scored. As the bases were loaded,
Zach Brennan doubled down the left field line to plate two more runs.
Cameron Moore then reached on a fielder's choice as
Quintin Reep scored to make it a 4-0 game.Â
The Pioneers scored their first run in the top of the second with a sacrifice fly to right field. However, FSU held the three-run lead (4-1) until the bottom of the sixth when Bailey scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Smith.Â
In the top of the seventh, the visitors were able to score once more thanks to a single but the rally ended there as the Falcons won the first game by three (5-2).
Micah Canterbury earned the win as he pitched six innings of one-run ball, allowing just two hits while striking out three. Smith went 2-3 from the plate as he drove in two runs and scored another.
Game 2: Point Park 13, Fairmont State 6
The visitors started the second game in the first inning with back-to-back RBI hits to take a 2-0 lead. No additional runs were scored in the second but Point Park extended its lead in the third. PPU scored four runs on three hits including a three-run homer to right center.
In the bottom of the fourth, Fairmont State got on the board when
Ryan Goff doubled down the left field line as two runs scored on the play. Two at-bats later,
Gunner Riley homered to left field to make it just a two-run game, 6-4.
Unfortunately, consecutive extra base hits by the Pioneers extended their lead back to four, 8-4. The visitors then hit a grand slam in the sixth to hold a 12-4 advantage.Â
Brennan delivered another run for FSU with a homer to left field in the bottom part of the sixth. However, Point Park responded with one of its own to lead off the seventh. The Falcons tacked on one last run in the bottom half as
Tyler Haskins scored on a wild pitch. Unfortunately, that was the last run of the game as Fairmont State dropped game two.
Fairmont State (16-12, 10-4) will try to complete the series against Point Park University on Sunday, April 6. Game one is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
