FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University softball team welcomed Frostburg State University to Duvall-Rosier Field. The Falcons completed the season sweep with wins of 6-0 and 6-1.
Game 1: Fairmont State 6, Frostburg State 0
Frostburg State threatened in the first inning with runners in scoring position but a ground ball to third ended the threat. In the bottom half of the inning,
Elizabeth Waszkiewicz hit an infield single that allowed
Bella Hess to score.Â
Fairmont State doubled the lead in the second when
Breonna Marietta reached on an infield single as
Kamilla Slayton scored.Â
The Falcons maintained the 2-0 lead but in the top of the fifth, the Bobcats were poised to score. With the bases loaded and just one out,
Micah Wilson came in to pitch. The first batter she faced hit a ground ball that forced an out at home. Wilson then followed it with a strikeout the end the inning.
In the bottom part of the fifth, Fairmont State added to its lead thanks to an RBI single by Slayton. Two more singles in the inning scored two additional runs to make it 5-0. The final run scored when
Breonna Marietta hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring home
Alyssa McCormick.
Wilson shut down the Bobcats over the next two innings, allowing just one hit to secure the win. Wilson earned the save as she pitched 2.2 innings of one hit ball with three strikeouts.Â
Caitlin Morey picked up the win as she went 4.1 innings, allowing just two hits with three walks. Waszkiewicz and Slayton each finished with two hits while scoring and driving in a run.Â
Game 2: Fairmont State 6, Frostburg State 1
In the second game, the Falcons once again claimed the early lead.
Emma Paul drew a walk and forced a rundown that caused an errant throw. On the play,
Brinna Hall was able to score safely for the 1-0 lead.
Frostburg State trailed by the slim margin until the fourth when it tied the game on a sacrifice fly to left. The game remained tied at one before Fairmont State reclaimed the lead.
As the bases were loaded, Waszkiewicz laid down a bunt between home and the pitcher. The pitcher tried to flip the ball to home but missed the target as it rolled to the backstop allowing
Bella Hess and
Alexa Andrews to score. The next at-bat,
Alexa Foresha hit a three-run homer to center field to make it a 6-1 game.
The Falcon pitching staff held the visitors to just one hit over final two frames to complete the sweep.
Delaney Haller notched her 14th win of the season as she went 5.1 innings, allowing the lone run on two hits.
Fairmont State (26-11-1, 11-3) welcomes Glenville State University to campus on Saturday, April 12. Game one is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
