CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University baseball team played its third-straight elimination game against Frostburg State University. The Falcons took down the Bobcats, 8-0.
Through the first two innings, neither team was able to push a run across the plate. In the top of the third, Fairmont State took the lead when
Connor Bailey scored on a fielder's choice.
Quintin Smith followed with a double to left field to plate
Tyler Haskins.Â
Still in the top of the third,
Noah Canterbury doubled to center field to give the Falcons a 4-0 lead. As the lineup came back around,
Connor Bailey hit an infield single to add another run. The final run of the inning came when Haskins drew a walk with the bases loaded to make it a 6-0 game.
In the top of the fourth,
Quintin Reep got in on the run scoring hits with an infield single as
Ryan Goff came home. With the 7-0 advantage, Fairmont State kept the momentum going as Frostburg State struggled to get a runner in scoring position.Â
The final run of the game occurred in the top of the eighth as Goff tripled to center to bring home
Cameron Moore. Over the final two innings, the Bobcats only totaled one hit as one runner was left on base with the Falcons winning by the eight-run difference.
Fairmont State (27-25) advances to the MEC Championship series with Point Park University on Sunday, May 11. Due to Point Park still in the transition phase in the NCAA, the Falcons earned the automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division II Baseball Tournament for the first time in program history. Tomorrow's game is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
